Utopos (pronounced ewe-toe-pos) is the collaboration of Kym Teusner of Teusner Wines and an old friend with a romantic and unattainable view of the wine world. They bought a superb Barossa vineyard known for producing a small harvest of fruit that has long been sought after by other producers for their high-end wines. “The vineyard sits on one of the highest points on the Barossa Valley floor, straddling the Greenock and Marananga sub-regions.” “It shares some of the most prized and famous terroir in the Barossa,” says Kym.

‘Utopos’ is a Greek word derived from ‘Utopia,’ which means a good and perfect place. Kym’s friend imagines the wine industry to be idyllic, but it’s not. However, he and Kym both believe they have discovered the ideal location and have named their vineyard ‘Utopos.’

Cornershop was tasked with creating a wine brand and packaging design that would appeal to both the Chinese and domestic markets; a modern solution with traditional values. “We used our imagination to create an unattainable ‘perfect’ place,” says Damian Hamilton, brand keeper and designer. “With the Chinese’s quality association with chateau etchings on labels in mind, Cornershop created a classically-inspired illustration of a Barossan Utopia.” Rather than embellishing the label design with additional symbols to appeal to the culture’s symbolic beliefs,

What UTOPOS

“In the early days, I spent a lot of time snooping around the Barossa trying to source grapes from established growers for Teusner Wines.” It was during this endeavor that I first discovered the vineyard that we now call Utopos.

We were already sourcing fruit from vineyards adjacent to this property for Teusner that were producing some of our best Shiraz wines (Albert and Righteous), so I was aware of the area’s geology and microclimate’s ability to produce outstanding reds.

I fell in love with the location and the way it was planted right away. I was desperate to play with the fruit that was growing nearby. However, the owner of the property was under contract with Penfolds and was unwilling to jeopardize that in order to sell me a bit of out of contract. However, he did nothing to lessen my desire… He was bragging to me about how his cabernet sauvignon was some of the only fruit from the Barossa to make Bin 707 grade, and so on.

So I was forced to fantasize about it every time I drove by on my way to see my other growers in the area. Until the owners decided in late 2014 that it was time to slow down and The auction featured all of the area’s biggest names. Standing on one of the area’s highest points, overlooking some of the most stunning views in the Barossa. I was so desperate to get it — these properties rarely come up for sale over multiple generations — that I went in with all guns blazing and put in my best offer as the first bid. It was the only bid, and we got the property!”

As of this writing, 4,782 bottles of Utopos have been sold, which may not appear to be particularly noteworthy. However, when our first introduction (August 2020) is combined with the sales value of each bottle, which is significant when compared to the average bottle sales value of many independent merchants, the figure is compelling.

Relationships are two-way streets, and our interpretations may be vastly different from Kym’s. Furthermore, and unbeknownst to Vinorium, we may be falling short of his own expectations. So, in true ‘don’t be afraid to ask or tell’ fashion, we asked Kym for his honest thoughts on Utopos in the UK.

“What else can I say?” My interactions with everyone at Vinorium have been seamless, professional, and completely enjoyable from the start! Even better, their first order of this brand new label sold out before it even arrived in the UK, so they doubled down with another order! Their Utopos Wines launch and market activation were unlike anything I had ever seen before! Since then, in the midst of unprecedented global turmoil, the growth of our Utopos wines through Vinorium has surpassed that of every other export market. When I think about the future of my relationship with Vinorium, I can’t express how excited I am.

What are its goals?

Over a period of ten to fifteen years, the City is being built as a laboratory to create, test, and develop effective technologies for both urban living and interplanetary exploration. Additionally, Utopos Blockchain City will be home to some of the most advanced medical facilities in existence in order to better understand how new treatments can be applied across different diseases and illnesses.
